Filmmaker Spotlight: Michelle Calloway with ‘Belle Isle’ and ‘Tallulah Park.’
This month, our Filmmaker Spotlight Interview was on our Best Short Film, 'Belle Isle', which screened at the inaugural Golden Isles Film Festival in Fall 2024. Our Executive Director, Pryce May, interviewed Michelle, founder of Lulah Films, discussing her journey from set photographer to independent filmmaker, including the creation of her short films Bell Isle and Tullulah Park.
Michelle shared insights on filmmaking as entrepreneurship, the importance of hands-on experience, and advice for aspiring filmmakers. She also highlighted her current festival run for Tallulah Park, plans to complete the first draft of her feature film by August, and expressed excitement for future projects.
Directed by Farrell Huntley and written by Michelle Calloway, who portrays the character Jessica, Belle Isle employs EMDR light therapy as an entry point into the main character's mind, using imagination as a tool to reprocess and release experiences she wishes to forget.
Throughout our insightful discussion, we explored a variety of nuances for “being” a filmmaker versus “becoming,” and what it takes to be part of the industry at any level of experience.
